Political parties worldwide often engaged in positive discussions and criticisms for the betterment of the Government machinery as well as delivering the people's mandate.
These positive discussions whether issues affecting the people or Government policies are tabled with a high degree of intellectual thoughts and arguments put forward before being finalized for implementation. This comes with the attitude of the lawmakers in truly serving the people first and delivering the best possible policies benefitting the country.
If we look at the composition of the lawmakers in other countries, many are professionals including the local council members. Not forgetting, even the Party Division or Constituency leaders, majority are professionals who maintain a high degree of professionalism and ethics in serving the nation.
Even in the run-up to Elections, the issues raised during the campaign rounds are regarding policies, developments and changes which can be improved. Never had campaigns involved issues on personal nature of the candidate e.g. character assassination being the forefront of a political campaign.
Coming back to Malaysia, often than not, the small teh tarik talks about politics with UMNO members gets into a less intellectual discussion and irregardless of the person's race they are talking to, they would always end up with;
(a) Ketuanan Melayu (Malay rights),
(b) champion of Islam,
(c) Government achievements over the years and
(d) whatever insinuations on Opposition they could think off.
Have anyone realised this?
But, when the word Projek (project) is mentioned, a smile usually lights up the conversation and if it involves a big sum, a bigger smile illuminates his face. For UMNO folks, Projek means money! Many of these projects are given without any tenders and quotes which explains why the many water puddles on road, irregular grass cutting, community centres crack before the warranty period expires and many more.
For people who are unfamiliar in dealing with certain category of individuals who "religiously" travel to Parliament and Minsitry to meet the various YBs to solicit for Projek(s), the picture of trust painted upon them can sometimes be deceiving.
There were many cases where author of great innovative and creative ideas can end up without anything as the intellectual rights had been "hijacked." This occurence is quite common and unless, you know the person well but yet that does not guarantee it will take place besides these honorable UMNO individuals came equipped with credentials as Ketua Cawangan and Bahagian.
The Ketua Cawangan or Bahagian claims they do attend tertiary studies and a certain degree which qualify the person to represent the people. A closer examination would reveal many are holding less prominent political related degrees such as for Geography, Islamic studies etc. with some could hardly speak English and yet they survived as a leader.
Amazing but true Malaysia Boleh spirit! We now know why there was a resistance in making a decision on teaching Science and Mathematics subject in English Language.
How and what will they do to escape if all these difficult yet intellectual questions and probing of Government policies which pushed them into a tight corner?
You will see the glare be taken off their faces by now! Surprise? Hell no!
The answer is simple, as they have sensed that you are more of an Opposition mindset by now, they will bring up the moral issues of Anwar Ibrahim sodomy and sex video. The moment they swtich the discussion to these issues, they will start pounding you as there is no tomorrow and ending the discussion in that manner.
What else can they engage you in during a discussion when the grassroot members are mostly non-professionals living in the villagers whom are much kept away from the abundance of information exposing BN frailties that can be found on the web but making it big due to favors.
As in the case of a particular Penang UMNO leader, a mamak, not educated and had worked as a security guard. He decided to join UMNO and started following a particular Datuk and Tan Sri around besides being the runner or sometimes bluntly known as balls carrier. Within a year, he succeeded in gaining the trust of his superior and was given few projects that gave him the riches which ultimately translated into bungalows, luxury cars etc. So there you go, kaki ampu or YES-man has its benefits in Malaysia UMNO political front.
Is this the kind of leader we Malaysians really want for our country to prosper and develop?
So what confidence can UMNO bring to the table of the Muslims and non-Muslims if they cannot indulge themselves in intellectual discussions knowing that the pipeline of calibre intellectual leaders are absolutely non-existence.
Come the next GE, I would like to see curtains for the UMNO goonies!
